Jaime Sommers was born in 1949 to James and Anne Sommers, political science professors who actually were undercover agents. They were killed when she was 16 and she was put under the guardianship of Helen and Jim Elgin, Steve Austin's mother and step-father. She studied education at Carnegie Tech (which exists but, unfortunately, didn't have an education program) but ended up going professional as a tennis player instead of teaching. After becoming bionic, she gave up tennis, noting that it would now be unfair due to her enhancements, and took up the teaching career she had trained for before entering the sport. Of course, she also had to work off the cost of her bionics and worked for the OSI.
(In 1975, Lindsay Wagner appeared in a two part episode of The Six Million Dollar Man as Steve Austin's childhood sweetheart, Jaime Sommers. She was a tennis pro who lost her right arm, right ear and both legs in a sky diving accident after reuniting and becoming engaged with Austin. Given bionic limbs, she rejected them and died. This was supposed to be the total of her role.
However, the fans won out, she was brought back with the story that she was cryogenically frozen for another two parter on SMDM. Her memory was damaged, allowing for the severance of her renewed relationship with Austin, so both could remain single in their own shows until 1994 when they were married in the last of the TV movies based on the two shows. The Bionic Woman was on ABC for two seasons, then canceled and picked up by NBC for one.)
Disclaimer: Obviously, I'm neither Lindsay Wagner nor the fictional character of Jaime Sommers. This is a tribute page, not really a role playing page, so please don't expect me to stay in character very much.
Please consider joining
orgbionicwoman to discuss the original series.
